SUGAR BEET CROP REQUIREMENTS
Become a Grower
To become a sugar beet grower, whether for production or fodder, please review the steps below:
1. Check Your Land Eligibility

Sugar beets require a 1-in-4-year rotation (or 2-in-8 years if canola is grown).

Ensure you have enough land to meet these crop rotation requirements.
2. Confirm Your Land Location & Setup

Sugar beets must be grown within two hours of Taber in the designated growing areas of: Coaldale, Tempest, Picture Butte, Vauxhall, Enchant, Taber, and Burdett/Bow Island.

Land must be irrigated and have access to the necessary equipment (defoliator, digger, or self-propelled unit).

4. Become a Licensed Producer
Fill out the Application for Registration for the Production & Marketing of Sugar Beets and submit it to ASBG (office@asbg.ca).
5. Obtain Quota

Sugar beets are a regulated product under the Marketing of Agricultural Products Act, and no new quotas are issued.

To grow sugar beets, you must acquire quota from an existing grower willing to transfer it.
6. Sign a Contract

Once licensed and granted quota, the processor will issue a contract specifying your quota and designated growing area.
If Growing Sugar Beets for Fodder

To grow sugar beets for fodder, complete and submit the Application to Grow Sugar Beets for Fodder form to ASBG.
